The City Island area boasts two museums where visitors can explore the long and varied history of the area:
The City Island Historical Society Nautical Museum, located in the heart of City Island, houses a treasure trove of Island history. The City Island Historical Society not only chronicles our maritime history but is the repository for all things City Island. From our strategic importance during the American Revolution, to reliving our recent past, it is a treasure trove for Islanders and history buffs alike. After more than a year of planning and renovation, the museum is now open on Saturdays and Sundays, from 1:00 to 5:00 PM. Please visit the museum’s website, www.cityislandmuseum.org, for more information about museum events and our ongoing Sunday Lecture series.
The Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum, in Pelham Bay Park, transports visitors back to the mid-1800’s as they wander through the mansion, carriage house and gardens. Both a New York City and a National Landmark, the Museum is home to one of the most beautifully situated historic houses in the city. The museum welcomes thousands of visitors each year for guided and group tours, education programs for children, public programs for adults, garden strolls, trail hikes, and a variety of special events.
