May Matters…

Jun 12, 2024 | City Island News

Last month, City Island businesses and organizations offered a lecture, and led a beach cleanup.

On Tuesday, May 14, City Island architect (and photographer, teacher, legal consultant, expert witness), Robert Arthur King (212 City Island Avenue), offered part one of a lecture on architect Frank Lloyd Wright.  Fascinating insights and information were presented to those who gathered for the event (see photo) at the Cinema on the Sound (270 City Island Avenue) ~ and they responded with questions and comments of their own.  Watch for more on a followup lecture on this interesting architectural figure.

That Sunday, May 19, Captain Mike’s Diving (530 City Island Avenue), with the City Island Oyster Reef (CIOR) and others, organized the 14th Annual Orchard Beach Cleanup.  In a social media post, CIOR noted: “Captain Mike’s Orchard Beach Cleanup was a success! With over 160 participants and divers, we collected 2,050 pounds of trash in the waters of Orchard Beach and the shores of Hunter Island and Twin Island! Thank you to the American Littoral Society, the U.S. Coast Guard, Hutchinson River Restoration Project, and NFWF for helping facilitate and table this awesome event! Can’t wait for next year’s.” (Photos below from the City Island Oyster Reef Facebook Page.)

As May ended, the City Island Nautical Museum launched a newly designed website. In an email announcement, the Museum noted that the new site “offers an expanded journey through the captivating maritime history of City Island, providing resources and information for before and after your visit to the City Island Nautical Museum.”

The just-launched site features:

  • Descriptions and photos from this season’s three special exhibits
  • Views and information on our permanent collection (our rooms)
  • Details about arranging tours and visits to the museum
  • A plethora of “City Island Stories,” about sail making and boat building,  City Island memories, and more
  • Ways for you to be part of the Museum

The new site features photography by City Island’s Ron Terner of Focal Point Gallery (321 City Island Avenue).

Always lots happening… lots to love… on City Island.  #ThinkCityisland
